How to Perform Toddler CPR

Performing CardioPulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving skill that any person should know. When performing this skill on a toddler, unique considerations need to be taken into account. Although the steps are similar as those for an adult, the technique needs to be adapted to the size and age of the child.

Steps for Performing Toddler CPR

  • Recognize an Emergency:If a toddler is unresponsive and not breathing, this is an emergency. Call 911 and have someone stay with the toddler at all times.
  • Check for Breathing:With the head supported, check for 5-10 seconds for normal breathing. If the toddler has an obstructed airway, do not move their neck and perform a finger sweep of the mouth.
  • Give Chest Compressions:To give chest compressions, push with two fingers in the center of the chest (just below the nipples). Use one-third of the depth of the chest of an infant and push down 1.5-2 inches. Push at a rate of 100-120 times per minute.
  • Give Rescue Breaths: Give two rescue breaths between each set of chest compressions. To give the breath, tilt the head back and pinch the nose closed. With a mask that fits, provide two breaths that last 1-2 seconds each.

Once the emergency or medical professional arrives, you should update them on the situation and continue to monitor the toddler. Follow the instructions of the medical personnel on the scene and provide all necessary information.

Conclusion

Performing CPR on a toddler is a functional and skilful task that could save a life. With the right technique, CPR can be an instrumental skillset to have on hand.
