Co-Sleeping: Just How Common Is It?

Though for years experts have warned against it, co-sleeping is becoming increasingly common. In 2017, more and more parents are embracing the idea of having their children sleep in their own bed, either fully or partially. But just how common is it?

Why Is Co-Sleeping Becoming More Common?

There are a few reasons why more and more parents are opting to allow their children to sleep in the bed. Here are a few:

  • Convenience: Many parents find it more convenient to have their children in the same bed instead of dealing with separate beds and rooms.
  • Peace & Calm: Having their child in the same bed can give parents a feeling of greater security and peace of mind.
  • Cultural Reasons: Some cultures believe strongly in co-sleeping, and many parents simply follow the traditions of their culture.

How Common Is Co-Sleeping?

The exact rate of co-sleeping is difficult to measure, as many parents are not open about their co-sleeping practices. But according to a survey of over 600 parents conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2016, 14 percent of babies sleep in their parents’ bed on a regular basis. This number increases to 33 percent when occasional co-sleeping is factored in.

The Takeaway

Though experts continue to warn parents against co-sleeping, it is becoming increasingly common. Parents should educate themselves on the risks and take appropriate steps to make sure their children are kept safe if they decide to co-sleep.
