5 Tips for Babysitters on Connecting with Kids

Babysitting can be a fun job for anyone looking to make extra money and work with children, but connecting with your charge can sometimes difficult. Here are five tips to help babysitters build meaningful and lasting relationships with the kids they look after.

1. Get to know their interests

Kids are full of surprising ideas and curiosities. Take the time to listen to what they have to say, and learn more about their interests. Ask them questions, like “What do you like to do in your free time?” or “What do you think about this book/movie/game?” A babysitter who takes the time to get to know what their charge likes will likely be remembered for their kindness.

2. Let them talk

It’s natural to want to chat and tell stories when babysitting, but letting the kids take the lead in conversations can build trust and give them a space to open up. It’s not all about the babysitter! Engage with them in activities they like or let them take the lead and play a game of their choice.

3. Give them your full attention

When the children you look after are talking, give them your whole attention and remember to turn off the TV or other distractions. Listen to their words, watch their body language, and don’t forget to show your enthusiasm and ask them questions. When you show you are interested in what kids have to say, they’ll be more willing to open up and share more with you.

4. Show them respect

There can often be a power imbalance between a babysitter and the kids they look after, but make sure to show your charge that you respect them. Respect their boundaries, opinions, and feelings, and treat them just as you would treat anyone else.

5. Build traditions

Small rituals or traditions like playing a board game every week or watching a certain show on Fridays can make kids feel special. These can be activities that the babysitter and their charge both enjoy, and can help foster positive relationships.

These are just a few tips for babysitters looking to build relationships with the kids they look after. With a bit of patience and understanding, kids and babysitters can develop strong, lasting bonds.
