How to Minimize Jet Lag in Babies and Toddlers in 7 Easy Steps

For frequent travelers, the dreaded jet lag can be disruptive and exhausting. This is especially true for babies and toddlers who may not yet be able to verbalize their discomfort. Here are seven easy steps that will help you contribute to a smooth transition for your kiddos while flying across the globe.

1. Prepare the Night Before

Pack everything you need the evening before your departure. This will help you save time, and more importantly, it will promote a sense of calm and routine as bedtime approaches.

2. Avoid Caffeine

The night before your flight, and throughout the duration of your journey, try to avoid any caffeinated drinks. Caffeine has a tendency to keep kids awake and could potentially make it harder to adjust to their new sleeping schedule.

3. Pack for Comfort

Pack familiar and comfortable items from home. Whether it’s a stuffed animal, favorite book, or the blankets they sleep with every night. Include these items in the carry on, to make the cabin feel like a cruise ship of fun.

4. Feed the Tired

Bring snacks & meals that your kiddo typically enjoys. Feeding babies and toddlers a full meal helps promote a midday or nighttime sleep. This allows your child to quickly settle into their biological clock at your new destination.

5. Have a Schedule Set

Set a routine before you arrive in your new destination. This can help to promote a sense of comfort to the children and even help you adjust to the time zone shift with ease.

6. Take Breaks

Break up the journey and dedicate time to explore. Doing so will give your kids the opportunity to burn off extra energy and become recalibrated with their inner clocks.

7. Utilize Supplements

If necessary for more extreme cases, consider supplements such as melatonin. This hormone helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm and can make a big difference in jet lag symptoms.

By following these seven easy steps, you can make jet lag a breeze for your babies and toddlers while traveling. Arm yourself with the right tools to prepare and you’ll be well on your way to an enjoyable jet-lag free trip!
